Shavuot, the giving of the Torah

The day G‑d gave the Torah to the Jewish people at Mount Sinai — celebrated with the Ten Commandments, Torah learning and dairy foods.

About the holiday

Receiving the Torah, every year

Shavuot marks the anniversary of the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai, more than 3,000 years ago. It comes at the end of the 49-day count of the Omer, which begins on the second night of Passover.

The Ten Commandments are read in the synagogue on the first day of Shavuot, and it is a beautiful tradition to bring the whole family — even the youngest children — to hear them.

Next ShavuotJune 10–122027Shavuot 5787Begins at sundown on Thursday, June 10, through nightfall on Saturday, June 12.
